Gear Review: Canon RF 10-20mm ƒ/4L

As a concert photographer, finding the perfect lens that can capture the essence and energy of live performances is paramount. After extensively testing the Canon RF 10-20mm f/4 lens in various concert settings, I can confidently say that it’s a game-changer for capturing the electrifying moments on stage.

From smaller venues to the pits in front of the main stage, the wide-angle perspective ranging excels in capturing expansive stage setups, dynamic crowd scenes, and immersive environments. Whether you’re shooting a packed stadium concert or an intimate club gig, this lens offers the flexibility to frame the entire scene or focus on specific elements with remarkable clarity.

The f/4 aperture may seem modest compared to faster lenses, but in concert photography, it strikes a perfect balance between light-gathering capability and depth of field. Even in low-light conditions typical of concert venues, the lens performs admirably, producing sharp images. Paired with a full-frame cameras in the Canon EOS R series, and you have a potent combination for low-light shooting without compromising image quality.

Another aspect that impressed me is the lens’s build quality and handling. Despite its compact size and lightweight design, it feels robust and durable, making it ideal for extended shooting sessions in challenging environments. This new lens replaces the EF equivalent in the Canon EF 11-24 ƒ4L, which is about twice as heavy and twice as big in my bag.

Additionally, the lens’s close focusing capabilities open up creative possibilities for capturing unique perspectives and details that add depth to your concert photography portfolio. Whether it’s capturing the intricate details of a musician’s instrument or the expressions of passionate fans in the front row, this lens excels in bringing those moments to life.

The Canon RF 10-20mm f/4L is an incredible choice for concert photographers looking to elevate their images. Though it isn’t as fast as some of the wide angle primes, its sharpness and size make this a no-brainer for Canon shooters looking to add a super-wide angle to their kit.
